Washi, this incredible material from Japan

Washi, this incredible material from Japan

Washi is a natural material from Japan made from paper. We use it for summer models because it is lightweight, flexible, and has better moisture absorption than cotton.

Washi, a simple and clever concept

Behind this incredible material from Japan lies a simple and clever concept: the art of Japanese paper. Paper socks? That’s a joke!, you might say. Well, you may well end up becoming a fan of Washi socks yourself.
Discover in this article the qualities of this almost impossible-to-find material in Europe, as well as its amazing properties.

Why choose Washi?

Washi has long been an essential element in Japanese life. For example, Shoji doors (traditional Japanese sliding doors) in typical homes. They keep things cool in summer when it is hot and humid and retain warmth in winter thanks to their humidity control, water absorption, insulation, and UV protection.
Washi socks have a wide variety of natural qualities, including better moisture absorption than cotton, as well as antibacterial properties.

A strong and flexible material dating back to the 7th century

Recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, Washi refers to traditional Japanese paper handmade from the inner bark of the Kozo (paper mulberry tree). The tradition of its meticulous and labor-intensive production dates back to the 7th century.
Unlike other papers made from wood pulp, Washi is a strong and flexible material thanks to its long fibers. It is sometimes used in decoration, art, and also in textiles. For example, the garments of some Buddhist monks in Japan are woven from it. It is a material that has proven its value and deserves to be better known in the West.

A natural material, ideal for summer

Let’s take a closer look at this incredible natural material. At Tabio, we use Washi for summer models because of its lightness, freshness, and strong moisture absorption—about 2.5 to 3 times more than cotton. It is also resistant to friction inside shoes and is perfectly suitable for dress shoes. As if that were not enough, Washi also has antibacterial / odor-resistant properties, a small bonus you definitely don’t want to miss in summer!

A raw texture that is easy to care for

Washi is a natural material with a surprisingly raw texture at first, and a feel similar to linen. In summer, you can enjoy the sensation of fresh, dry feet in Washi socks.
Some of our models are knitted with a textured grain effect for an optimal light feel against the skin.
Your socks can be washed frequently on a normal cycle, preferably in a laundry net.

The more you use it, the more comfortable it becomes and it will certainly make your day more enjoyable. Does Washi sound more interesting now? Come and discover its qualities for yourself!
